Edmonton is heavily in debt and the current salary of over $200K for mayor is considered outrageous given that the average salary in Edmonton is around $50K. Politics isn’t a real job. It's the same as winning a lottery. Fun and games for great pay. The role of mayor isn’t more demanding than the role of councillor; EMP is searching for a mayoral candidate who has grit to lead by example and be committed to the policies of EMP.

To run as the mayoral candidate for EMP, you shall be willing to accept $75K as a salary deemed more than adequate. In exchange, EMP shall cover nomination fees and promote you on our website as well as assist with the quorum of 100 signatures to run for mayor.

EMP is searching for councillors who have grit and are committed to our policies. Edmonton is heavily in debt and the current salary of over $100K for councillor is considered excessive given that the average salary in Edmonton is around $50K.

To represent EMP as a candidate seeking to run as councillor, you shall be willing to accept $75K as a salary to demonstrate frugality and lead by example. In return, EMP shall cover nomination fees and promote you on our website as well as assist with the quorum of 25 signatures to run as councillor for Ward 1, Ward 6 or Ward 8.

Nominations

The nominated mayor and councillors to run in the 2025 municipal election for emp will be decided by random draw from the candidates who've joined emp. The draw will be at noon on Friday September 12th, 2025 and the venue for the draw will be announced by September 10th, 2025 to candidates who've been vetted and confirmed by emp.

Note: eligible voters can live outside ward 1, 6 or 8 to run as candidate for councillor in these wards

You’ve got grit and like the policies of EMP but running for mayor or councillor isn’t for you. You can still help elect our candidates for mayor in Edmonton and councillor in Ward 1, Ward 6 or Ward 8. You’ll have the chance to meet the candidate for mayor or councillor in person to sponsor him or her and have your say about what’s most important to you. Verification of your identity, address and signature in the presence of the candidate or delegate will be recorded on paper only and provided in confidence to Edmonton Elections to register the candidate. Your address and signature as well as government issued ID are not required until you meet the candidate or delegate in person and will not be shared or recorded electronically in order to safeguard your privacy.


To sponsor the mayoral candidate you must be eligible to vote in any ward in Edmonton.

To sponsor a candidate for Ward 1, Ward 6 or Ward 8 you must be eligible to vote and be a resident of Ward 1, Ward 6 or Ward 8, respectively.
